Call of Duty's cross-platform account system uses Activision IDs, formatted as DisplayName#ID (a name plus a numeric discriminator). The display portion accepts some Unicode; the numeric discriminator is assigned automatically and cannot be styled. The rules for what Unicode passes differ between Modern Warfare, Warzone, and the mobile titles.

An important clarification that applies to console players: PlayStation Network display names and Xbox Gamertags have their own separate Unicode rules, managed by Sony and Microsoft respectively. If you play on console and your in-game name is your PSN or Gamertag, those platform rules override whatever Activision ID permits. This guide covers the Activision ID specifically.

Activision ID Structure

The Activision ID display name is 2–16 characters. The full identifier shown in some contexts is DisplayName#12345 — the number after the hash is automatically assigned. This is similar to the old Discord discriminator system (which Discord retired in 2023) or the Battle.net BattleTag format.

The numeric discriminator means the display name itself does not need to be globally unique. Two players can both have the display name GHOST if their discriminator numbers differ. This has the same implication as Fortnite's 2023 policy: the stylized name pool is larger than it appears.

Which Characters Are Accepted

Activision does not publish a comprehensive allowed character list. Based on player reports:

  • ASCII letters and digits: Always accepted.
  • Underscores and hyphens: Accepted as separators.
  • Latin accented characters: Generally accepted — é, ü, ã, ø, and most Latin Extended-A/B block characters.
  • Cyrillic and Arabic script: Accepted in the Activision ID for accounts on corresponding regional servers. May display as expected or as question marks depending on the other player's system font.
  • Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols: Inconsistently accepted. Some Mathematical Bold characters pass the field validation; others produce a generic error. The filter appears to vary by COD title and has changed across updates.
  • Combining diacritics (zalgo/glitch): The Activision ID field rejects heavy combining diacritic stacking. Light decoration (1–2 combining marks per letter) may pass on some title versions.

COD Mobile vs Warzone vs MW3

COD Mobile (published by TiMi Studio Group, published by Activision in select regions) uses a different account system than the PC/console Call of Duty titles. COD Mobile accounts use a Garena or Activision login depending on region, with different display name rules.

COD Mobile display names have a 16-character limit and accept a broader Unicode range than the Activision ID for PC/console. Mathematical Bold characters are generally accepted in COD Mobile display names, and the Mobile title has historically been more permissive with Unicode than Warzone or MW. The character count in COD Mobile appears to be by code point, not code unit.

Console Platform Name Rules

  • PlayStation Network: PSN Online IDs accept letters, digits, hyphens, and underscores. No Unicode beyond ASCII. Display names (separate from the Online ID since 2019) accept a broader set including some Latin Extended characters. The in-game COD name for a PS4/PS5 player defaults to their PSN Online ID.
  • Xbox Gamertag: Gamertags accept Unicode in the display name portion (the part after the service-tag suffix). Microsoft explicitly supports Unicode Gamertags across a range including Latin Extended, Greek, Cyrillic, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese scripts. The rules are published by Microsoft and are the most permissive of the major gaming platforms for Unicode display names.

How the Name Displays In-Game

In COD titles, your display name appears in the killcam when you eliminate another player, in the post-match scoreboard, in the pre-match lobby, and in party chat. The killcam is the highest-visibility placement for opponents to see your name.

The killcam renders at small size. Names with complex Unicode styles that require specialized font glyphs risk rendering as tofu boxes on opponents' screens if their device font does not include the relevant Unicode block. Fullwidth characters and small caps phonetic characters (both BMP) have better cross-device coverage than SMP Mathematical block characters.

How to Change Your Activision ID Display Name

  1. Go to my.callofduty.com and log in.
  2. Go to the Account section and find the Activision ID display name field.
  3. Paste your generated name. The field validates immediately. If the character is rejected, the field either shows an error or silently strips the offending character.
  4. Activision ID changes have a cooldown. Confirm your name is correct before saving — switching back if the style renders as boxes requires waiting through the cooldown period.

The reliable starting point for a stylized COD name: Latin Extended accented characters for subtle distinction, or small caps phonetic characters for a more visible effect. Mathematical Bold has inconsistent acceptance in the Activision ID for PC/console; it is more reliably accepted in COD Mobile. Test in the name field before committing to the cooldown.

The Call of Duty Name Generator checks a styled in-game name against the platform's actual character rules before you commit to it.
