- Outline text reads cleanest against a light background: the hollow strokes rely on contrast with the background, and on a dark background the open interior fills in visually and reduces legibility.
- Use it for display names and short headings: at headline scale the open letterforms are distinctive; at body-text scale the fine strokes can thin out on low-resolution screens.
- Pair outline text with plain text rather than mixing it with another styled alphabet: the double-struck look is distinctive enough that a second style beside it reads as a mismatch.
Common mistakes
- Using outline text for a hashtag or keyword you want found in search: double-struck characters are distinct from their plain equivalents and will not match a plain-text search.
- Expecting every letter and all punctuation to be outlined: the double-struck block covers letters and digits only, so punctuation and special characters stay in their plain form.
- Using outline in a dark-mode app without checking: what looks clean in light mode may become harder to read in dark mode where the contrast the open strokes depend on is reduced.

They were added for mathematical notation, where a double-struck R means the real numbers, but the shapes read as a hollow, outlined font, which is what this page uses them for.
Why do some letters or symbols stay solid in outline text?
