- Bold the first line or headline of a long post and leave the rest plain: a reader scans the bold line first, then decides whether to continue reading.
- In a bio, bold your niche or job title and leave everything else in plain text: it hands the reader the most important fact at a glance without making the whole bio feel like a shout.
- A single bolded word inside an otherwise plain sentence carries more emphasis than a fully-bolded sentence, where nothing stands out because everything does.
Common mistakes
- Bolding every word: uniform emphasis is the same as no emphasis, and a fully bold paragraph reads identically to a plain one in terms of visual weight.
- Expecting bold Unicode to work with Markdown or HTML bold on the same platform: they are different mechanisms, and mixing them can produce inconsistent results depending on how the app renders text.
- Skipping a mobile preview: bold Unicode can look identical to the plain font on older devices that substitute the nearest available glyph rather than the intended bold variant.
