About the Instagram Username Generator
Your @username is restricted to letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, no Unicode, no exceptions.
The Name field directly above it has no such restriction. That is the line shown in bold at the top of your profile and in search results, and it accepts styled Unicode happily. Style the Name, keep the @username plain and searchable.
Step by step
How to use the Instagram Username Generator
Enter a word or leave it blank, generate ideas, copy the one you like, and paste it into the name field.
Add a word (optional)
Type a word you want in the name, such as your handle or a theme, or leave it blank for fully random ideas.
Generate ideas
Press Generate to get a fresh batch of names. Keep pressing for more: the ideas are different every time.
Copy your favourite
Press Copy on the name you want. It copies with its styling intact.
Paste it in
Paste it into the display name or nickname field. Very tall or heavily decorated names can be shortened by the app, so check how it looks once it is in.
Paste it into the Name field above your bio, not your @username. Handles are part of a web address, so they only accept letters, numbers and a dot or underscore: styled text is rejected there no matter what.
Get it right
Tips and common mistakes
Tips
- Keep your actual name or brand readable within the styled Name: a word styled in bold or script is recognizable; a name where every letter is replaced by a symbol with no readable structure is not, and Instagram search may surface it less reliably for people who already know you.
- The Name limit is 30 characters including any styling: fullwidth characters are each one character, but the wide spacing they add means a 30-character fullwidth name runs long visually. Count characters, not visual length.
- Use a lighter style accent to make the Name field distinctive without sacrificing legibility: a single bold word, a small-caps surname, or a cursive brand name next to a plain word performs better in search than a fully styled string.
Common mistakes
- Trying to style the @username: Instagram only accepts letters, numbers, periods, and underscores there, and will reject any Unicode on save. The Name field is the one that accepts styled text.
- Changing the Name more than twice in 14 days: Instagram enforces a rate limit on Name changes, so settle on a style before saving rather than experimenting one change at a time.
- Putting the styled name only in the bio and leaving the Name field plain: the Name field is the bold line at the top of your profile that Instagram shows in search results, which makes it significantly more visible than the bio.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between my Instagram username and name?
The @username is your unique address: it appears in your profile URL and must stay plain. The Name is a free-text display field shown in bold on your profile; it can be changed freely and accepts styled Unicode.
Will a styled name hurt whether people can find me?
It can. Instagram search matches against both fields, so a fully decorated Name is harder to match on. A common compromise is to keep your real name readable and add styling or a symbol as an accent rather than converting every letter.
How often can I change my Instagram name?
Instagram limits Name changes to twice within fourteen days, so decide on the style you want before you save. Copy it here first and paste it once.
Is the Instagram Username Generator free to use?
Yes. The Instagram Username Generator is completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, and no limits on how much text you convert or how many times you copy it.
